CONTAINER GARDEN TIPS

[YEA]  07/03/2009: DJ from Pdx, Or writes: "My dad and his farming buddies use to have a contest every year to see who could grow the best corn in a container. They found that a large container could hold 5 or 6 stalks of corn.

Just beware of a little friendly competition. One of the guys put round up on his work gloves and killed everyone else's corn while "visiting" and checking out the competitions progress. No one was the wiser until he fest up.

My grandma would tell me to layer in containers. If you plant corn then plan cucumbers around the base. Not only do the cukes grow around the base they will grow up the corn some also without damaging the corn. Leaf lettuce in the middle and cabbage or carrots on the edge."

04/25/2009: Thomas from San Diego, CA replies: "I have limited garden space as well and have found succession planting helps. I replace spring vegetables with summer crops. I also plant radishes and lettuce seeds throughout the summer so I can extend the eating season!"
