Carbon Credits/Offsets

rss feed

While it is impossible to both live and be non-carbon-emitting, it is possible to pursue carbon-neutrality, compensating for the amount of carbon your daily activities produce by planting trees or funding new renewable energy projects. Current options, with both nonprofit and for-profit companies, range from about $5.50 per metric ton of carbon dioxide offset to as much as $15.

Why Do It?

Purchasing carbon-offset credits is a way to immediately reduce your own carbon footprint, on an exchange basis. Once you have done everything you can to improve your energy efficiency and reduce the amount of carbon you put into the atmosphere, carbon credits can counterbalance those inescapable carbon costs of living on Earth.

Option 1: Certain companies offset your or your company's carbon emissions through the planting of managed, monitored forest seedlings. These new trees will continue to draw carbon out of the atmosphere for more than a century before being further trapped in the form of sustainably harvested lumber.

Option 2: Another option is for a carbon offset company to sponsor new renewable energy projects, squeezing out more carbon-intense electrical utilities that burn fossil fuels and hopefully eliminating new coal plants to meet our increasing demand for electricity.

Option 3: Other options, such as methane collection and carbon sequestration, are also out there. Find the option and the price you like best in this convenient chart offered by EcoBusiness Links.
