Reducing E-Waste
It's the garbage of the moment! From cell phones to computers, we throw away a massive amount of electronic materials at an ever-increasing rate.
Why Do It?
Electronics don't break down at all well, amounted to two million tons of U.S. trash in 2005 (while it's the most rapidly expanding category of waste), and many of the components are truly toxic.
Option 1: Find a local electronics recycling center through this general or this e-waste specific website. A small fee is likely, as the process of recycling these materials still is not cost-effective (except for cell phones!)
Option 2: Legislation is beginning to take hold in various states to require manufacturers to take back or cover the cost of recycling e-waste. Check with your item's manufacturer, or the retailer where you purchased the item, to see if they have a recycling assistance program.
Option 3: Give it away! That old computer may have become too slow for your fast-paced life, but someone else will think otherwise. Heck, NASA still uses Commodore 64's!
